Workshop Themes
We seek papers that explore through empirical, theoretical or design approaches the range of issues that arise from the presence, uses and effects of computers in the conduct, structure and outcomes of work. We are particularly interested in papers that focus on new forms of qualified or professional work -- that work which is often called "knowledge work." We are also interested in papers theorizing on or developing empirical insights into areas of design; technical, scientific and medical collaboration, and distributed forms of participation.
Given the resurgence of interest in work – due in part to large-scale changes in the ways in which work is being located, arranged, and supported – we are particularly keen to see papers that suggest novel strands of scholarship, new topics, explore new technological arrangements relative to their impacts on work, or explore the mutually-constituted nature of working and computing. Papers that would benefit from feedback in an informal and discussion-oriented format are particularly interesting for this type of workshop.
Workshop Activities and Goals
The intent of having this workshop before CSCW’08 is to bring together scholars of computing and work (involved with the IFIP 9.1 Working Group) with like interested people in the CSCW community. Specific goals for this pre-conference workshop are:
- To bring together scholars with interests in the roles of computers in work
- Provide a venue where papers and ideas on this broad topic can be presented in an informal way to others who share similar interests and
- To develop both informal (among individuals) and formal plans for sustaining the dialog across these intellectual communities into the future.
Background on IFIP 9.1
The international federation of information processing (IFIP) is a global scholarly organization divided into technical committees. Technical committee 9 (TC9) is focused on the relationships among computers and society. The TC has a number of working groups, with working group (WG) 9.1 focusing on the relationships between computers and work. In 2006, after nearly seven years of dormancy, the IFIP WG 9.1 working group on 'computers and work' was re-initiated by scholars of computing and work whose intellectual homes span information systems, information science, the sociology of work, digital libraries and social informatics. Since then the working group has held two workshops – one prior to European Conference on Information Systems (in June, 2007 in St. Gallen, Stwitzerland); the second following the International Conference on Information Systems (in December, 2007 in Montreal, Canada).
