The Bishop Erazm Ciołka museum specializes in 12th-18th century Polish art. Which means a lot of Jesus art, Jesus and Mary art, and saint art. What caught our eye in this corner of a delightfully refurbished (and practically deserted, even on a free day) museum was a statue of the Big Man himself, God, holding up his son, looking kind of similar to The Throne of Mercy by Dürer. I admire any sculptor who has the guts to take on such a big subject, especially when representations of the Trinity are so hard to come by in art history.
For something completely different, we then visited the Wyspiański museum for a little turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau action. As part of the Young Poland movement, he helped lead the charge of neo-romanticism and decadence. More recently, of course, his natualistic painting of his daughter Helenka has acquired fame for serving as Sharon’s facebook profile picture.
