OK, we’ll break radio silence to share this wine tasting moment on JP’s 42nd birthday, at the Sterna Winery in the hills above Paphos. Take note of the local nibbles for tasting, including the candied nuts and sugar candies for extinguishing the flames after the snaps finale. Papou seems to approve.
Cyprus has been making wine since at least 2300 B.C., and perhaps as early as 3500 B.C. And, Cypriot wine won the first ever wine tasting competition, sponsored by French King Philip Augustus in the 13th century. We felt part of something larger than ourselves as we worked through the shiraz, cab, and merlot.
Earlier that day, we had freshly baked Cypriot village bread, and kielbasa from the new Polish deli in town. In the evening, we watched the sun set into the Mediterranean from the deck. Not sure if there’s a better way to spend a birthday, but we’ll try next year.
