Pic of the Day: September 8

From an educational standpoint, it’s not always easy to make amphoras, the ubiquitous ceramic jugs from antiquity, a fascinating subject.  The Bodrum Castle has therefore created the “Symposium of Eastern Mediterranean Amphoras”, placing the jugs in an exciting and intriguing circular chamber, as if they were having a parliamentary session.

Their joint declaration reads:

We are the clay jars with the round shaped mouths, two handles, pointed base.  We are tall and we are known for our cylindrical shaped body.  For many centuries, we carried wine, olive and salted fish.

After declaring a few ‘point of orders’ and passing an additional resolution or two, we declared this display of the classical world’s shipping containers a pedagogical success and moved on.
