How cute are African Penguins?  Off the charts.

Boulders Beach, near Cape Town, is home to a colony of about 3,000.  It’s one of the easiest places in the world to hang out with penguins, waddling wild and free.  We had trouble dragging ourselves away.

During the South African spring, most African Penguins are feeding at sea in preparation for the molting season.  As the old feathers come off, they’ll need to stay on land until their new cold-water outfit is ready to go.

From the 1.5 million African Penguins counted a century ago, only 150,000 remain today.  But this entire colony grew from a single, monogamous pair of birds in 1983.

As you leave the beach, a sign warns you to check under your car for penguins.
