Cape Town’s colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood is the most visible home of the unique Cape Malay culture. The majority of the population in this part of South Africa aren’t white or black, but mixed race ‘Coloureds’, most of whom speak Afrikaans as their native language. The Cape Malays throw an Indonesian background into the mix.
We’ve captured an impromptu cricket match in the streets. South Africa’s national cricket side, known as the Proteas, had just crashed out of their own ICC Champions Trophy in the first round after being favored to win. The Proteas have a reputation for choking during big international tournaments, and this performance only reinforced their unfortunate reputation.
Bo-Kaap is a mostly Muslim working-class neighborhood. I’m not sure where the color palate came from, but I did enjoy seeing a minty-green mosque for the first time.
