Western Province (W.P.) rugby is a little confusing for the neophyte. No, not the game itself. Tries (touchdowns) are worth 5 points, extra point kicks are worth 2, and a kick through the uprights from the field is worth 3 points. It’s that they compete on their own for domestic Currie Cup play, but they combine players from two other teams in Western Cape to compete as the Stormers in the international Super 14 league. So when we saw W.P. play Boland Kavaliers, we saw two parts of the Stormers play against themselves. Everybody wins.
I wasn’t bothered, though, as I guzzled $2 half-liters of stadium beer (take that, AT&T Park!) and gnawed furiously on local meat jerky (biltong). Tickets for the game were about $7, and parking was free on the street (minus a small tip for the guy ‘watching’ our car).
Not that I’m one of these travelers obsessed by prices. It’s just that with the US dollar collapsing at an inconvenient time, I need the small victories.
