New Zealand’s hiking trails (sorry, tramping) are legendary. Instead of going hut-to-hut for multiple nights, we favored modest day hikes. Like this one, in the mountains above Queenstown.
The long distance Great Walks trails were originally built for hunters, particularly deer hunters. The deer population in the 1950’s was out of control. Only later did the trails become popular for hikers, so much so that reservations are now required months, sometimes a year, in advance for a multi-day, hut-to-hut trip.
