The Marlborough region of New Zealand transformed itself from an economically-depressed, fruit growing backwater to a world-class wine region in less than 20 years. It is, of course, home to probably the finest Sauvignon Blanc in the world.
Featured here is our successful liberation of one of Saint Clair Estate‘s most award-winning Sauvignon Blancs. I don’t know if it lived up to one critic’s billing as like ‘having sex for the first time’, but it was satisfying, and didn’t last long.
What’s great about NZ wine tasting is how relaxed and friendly tasting rooms are, even at one of the best wineries on the planet for this varietal. Even to the point of having a few chickens in the parking lot. And not too expensive. It would be refreshing if Napa and Sonoma could offer the same.
