Pic of the Day: February 9

La Recoleta cemetery has to be the most photographed location in Buenos Aires.  Interesting looking crypts, and great stories, like the girl who was buried alive and has the scratch marks carved on the front door of her memorial.

It’s not even that expensive to buy your own family crypt.  But you have to find someone willing to sell.  The local government won’t confiscate your family crypt if you don’t pay your taxes–only if it becomes so run down that it’s in danger of collapse.  So turnover is minimal, even if the latest generation isn’t that enthused about the cemetery.

You’re in danger of being crushed in front of the Duarte family crypt (Evita), but whole neighborhoods of this busy city of the dead you can have practically to yourself.
