Marrakech’s main square, Djemaa el Fna, is famous for the chaos of its snake charmers, magicians, singers, orange juice squeezers and, after dark, dozens of food stalls.
Before you is almost everything on Stall #5’s menu: the harissa soup, the super-sugary mint tea, and the plate of dates. The only thing missing is the plate of crispy sugary pastries in front of the chef.
When UNESCO made Djemaa el Fna its first global Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, perhaps this 20 dirham ($2.50) snack was what they had in mind.
