There are still real nomads, and real caravans, in the Sahara desert. They may not take the legendary 52-day route to Timbuktu, but they still spend a good part of their lives outside the confines of normal civilization. Our nomad guides told us that they never feel truly comfortable in towns or villages. “In the desert, I feel strong,” one of our guides said.
I guess everyone needs to find their desert.
All the nomads we talked to also made a point of noting that the desert was a great place to be because there were “no police”.
