We took advantage of Krakow’s 19th annual Jewish Culture Festival to tour the seven synagogues in the neighborhood where we live (Kazimierz). Poland was once the Jewish capital of Europe, but after the slaughter of three million Polish Jews during WWII (out of 3.3 million total), and after various pogroms and removals of citizenship rights since, it’s obviously a challenge to get Jewish culture going again. But they tell us the new generation of Poles is really interested, and the festival is a big success.
Sharon took this mural picture outside the Popper synagogue, now used as a youth and arts center. She asked me to mention there’s a chicken in the mural, just out of sight on the left.
