Welcome to the border between Poland and Slovakia, the Tatra Mountains. Zakopane, the ski resort of the Tatras, is a short bus ride away from Kraków. From Zakopane we took a cable car to the top of Kasprovy Wierch. There was an incredible 3 hour wait at the bottom. Our guidebook has this advice: never try to out-drink a Pole. To this we would add: never try to out-wait a Pole.
We thought we’d take it easy by starting at the top, and having a leisurely walk down. Our choice seemed to be validated by the sight of Polish children being mercilessly marched up the mountain by their insistent parents. But the leisurely stroll turned into a 3500 foot vertical cliff dive that wreaked havoc on our middle-aged legs. Days later, we’re still feelin’ it every time we leave the apartment. Let’s call it a souvenir.

Enjoying my vicarious adventure through you both, through Europe… this caption, in particular, brings back pain-staking memories of my climb UP to midway, Pikes Peak, then DOWN… over 6500 cumulative feet in my tree-torns, on a first and last date with a fellow who wanted to take me ‘hiking’! Hugs –
