Pic of the Day: August 18

The Allens are officially back on tour.  Time to bring back the regular updates our followers desperate crave…

Ever wonder why nobody travels by train anymore?  On board the Filia Express, the overnight train from Thessaloniki to Istanbul, the ‘express’ trip took 14.5 hours to cover a couple hundred miles, including an hour of Turkish border control and health inspection in the middle of the night.

The Greek ticket agent insisted on separating us into a boy’s cabin and a girl’s cabin.  Luckily, the porter took pity on us, and the legitimately married Allens were able to share a bunk.  (“You could have had a Greek woman instead,” said my new favorite railway employee.)

Our morning arrival, dieseling up the shore of the Bosphorus, didn’t quite have the romance factor of the Orient Express.  But it had a sense of adventure you don’t find on Ryanair.
