Big USF response to the Net Impact undergraduate survey

Net Impact is the leading international organization for MBA students committed to social responsibility and environmental sustainability in business. I try to help out as the faculty liaison for our USF chapter, one of 140 chapters worldwide.

Net Impact recently launched a nationwide survey of business undergraduates and their attitudes toward corporate social responsibility. We asked our business undergrads for a big response, and they delivered. 84 of the 2,411 responses nationwide came from USF. Thank you!

Though the results won’t be officially announced until next month, I can share a few data points with you:

  • 73% of USF respondents believed CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) ’should be integrated into required curriculum classes’
  • 41% of USF respondents are currently members of a club or activity that emphasizes CSR
  • 35% of USF respondents are interested in joining a club or activity emphasizing CSR
  • while almost all USF respondents believe that corporations should work towards the betterment of society, few believe corporations are doing so.

Read more below for additional survey data, including the juicy open-ended responses. If you have any comments to share on CSR at our school, or these survey results, add them to the blog and I will present them to the folks who run the show (i.e., the Dean’s Office). Read the rest of this entry »

MBA India Tour itinerary

tourgroup.jpgWe’ve posted the thank you letter for the 2007 MBA India tour online. The letter includes the list of Indian leaders and executives who met with us during our two weeks in Bangalore and Delhi.

Tremendous credit goes to Satish Gopalam for lining up such an impressive list of companies, including Wipro, Infosys, Cisco, Toyota, and JP Morgan Chase, and organizations such as TiE Bangalore, the Azim Premji Foundation, and the SoS Children’s Village in Delhi.

You can read more about student impressions of the tour on their blog. A few of my pictures from the tour are available at jpedia.org.

Podcasting at the Internet Apps class

The creator of the USF MBA Podcast Series, Tiago Alves, visited the Internet Business Apps class last Thursday to show our students how it’s done.

Tiago’s MBA Podcast Series began as a class project in last fall’s MBA Internet Business Apps class. His podcast series has subscribers around the world, and is a great tool for keeping up with the interesting guest speakers and visitors that come to USF. Search for “MBA podcast” on Google, and you’ll find the USF MBA Podcast Series on the top page.  As of this post, he is up to episode #25.

Tiago uses the open-source Audacity program for sound editing, the PodPress plugin for WordPress to publish his podcasts without having to stress over news feeds, and FeedBurner for analytics. Very impressive, effective, and surprisingly easy.

My online strategy

After attending the Web 2.0 Expo and SaaScon this week, I realize that I need to get serious about having an online presence.

Of course, I’ve had my web site jpedia.org up for almost a year now. It’s simply a page that points to specific items done for classes or research projects. But it is still very much in the old model of putting stuff up on a web site for people to download. It isn’t statements or ideas that are part of a larger conversation, or a larger community, and that is where I need to be.

I’ll admit that I’ve started a few blog experiments in the past, only to have them die out after a few weeks or months. The difference this time is that I will try not to have the classic ‘diary’ model of ‘what’s up with me?’. Every piece of content should be about sharing information in a way that moves a conversation forward.
